Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU), founded in 1895 by the Congregation of Divine Providence, is a coeducational liberal arts institution serving approximately 2,800 students enrolled in fifty-six bachelor's degree programs, forty-eight master's degree programs, and two doctoral programs in the arts, sciences, business, education, professional studies, and social services. With a strong focus on student achievement, OLLU offers several programs to help ensure success, including the Success Coaching program added in fall 2006. Students work one-on-one with professional success coaches on everything from time management to success strategies. Undergraduate degrees are offered in a variety of areas including a new, one-of-a-kind program in Hispanic marketing. In addition, bilingual students who speak English and Spanish may choose to earn dual-language certification with any undergraduate degree. The certification program prepares students to provide professional services to English and Spanish-speaking populations. In fall 2007, the University will begin competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics with a men's soccer and women's volleyball team. In addition, OLLU offers a full range of intramural sports. Campus athletic facilities include playing fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, an outdoor track with fitness-trail equipment, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and basketball courts, and the University Wellness and Activities Center, which houses a gymnasium, aerobics room, weight room, racquetball courts, lounge/study areas, and other facilities. The campus has nine computer labs and offers wireless internet access in all areas. The 49,000-square-foot Sister Elizabeth Anne Sueltenfuss Library houses most of the University Library system's holdings, including a Texana collection, and several rare book collections. It also contains state-of-the-art technology classrooms, conference rooms, study areas, group study areas, and a 24-hour computer and study laboratory. Modern laboratory facilities are available in general chemistry, general biology, bacteriology, physiology, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physics. The Decision Theater, a simulated boardroom arena with one-way observation galleries, is used to teach decision-making and problem-solving courses for business students. Cameras, DVD recorders and giant plasma screens provide immediate feedback on student performance. As part of its research and student practicum facilities, the University maintains the Harry Jersig Center for communication and learning disorders; the Community Counseling Service for marriage, family, and individual counseling; the St. Martin Hall Elementary School; the Child Development Center for training and studying developmental learning; the Center for Women in Church and Society; the Center for Sociological Practice; and the Center for Mexican American Studies and Research. These campus facilities serve clients from the San Antonio community and give students the opportunity for hands-on learning in their field of study. Service is deeply ingrained in the OLLU community through class-based service-learning projects, service organizations, University-wide service projects and a unique Meals on Wheels program serving the community surrounding the University. OLLU's Center for Service-Learning and Volunteerism helps students match service opportunities with academic interests, allowing students to learn more about their area of study while helping others. OLLU works to ensure that all students can enjoy a private education by offering merit- and need-based financial aid. More than 90 percent of full-time undergraduate students at OLLU receive financial assistance in the form of university academic scholarships, state or federal grants, work-study grants or loans.
